practice solving addition and subtraction problems - math grade 2 - lesson 19

Today we are going to continue to practice solving addition and subtraction problems. Missing numbers can be at the beginning of the problem, in the middle, or at the end after the equal sign. We have been solving problems with missing numbers in the second position and after the equal sign. Let’s do a practice problem together.

Note to the Teacher: For the Learn section today, students will continue to practice solving addition and subtraction problems with an unknown in the second position.

TEACHER DO: Write 7 + _____ = 15 on the board.

TEACHER SAY: Looking at this problem, I see an unknown in the second spot.

TEACHER DO: Point to the unknown.

TEACHER SAY: Give me a Thumbs Up if you know how to use a mental math strategy to solve this problem.

STUDENTS DO: Give a Thumbs Up if they know how to solve the problem. Selected students share their thinking.

TEACHER DO: Listen carefully to students’ ideas. If students mention counting on, build instruction on their ideas. If no students mention it, focus instruction on the Counting On strategy. Adjust the following section as needed.

TEACHER SAY: We know we have to figure out how many we have to add to 7 to get to 15. For this problem, we can start at 7 and count on to 15. Count on with me.

STUDENTS DO: Count aloud from 7 to 15 with the teacher.

TEACHER SAY: What do we add to 7 to get 15?

STUDENTS DO: Call out together: 8.

TEACHER SAY: Th at is right. Our unknown is 8. We can write our number in the blank and check our work now. Solve to see if 7 plus 8 equals 15.

STUDENTS DO: Check to see if 8 is the correct answer.

2.TEACHER SAY: Great job. Now it is your turn to try some. First, we need to find a partner. Let’s do Hands Up, Pair Up to find a partner other than your Shoulder Partner. Bring your student book and pencil with you.

STUDENTS DO: Find a partner by doing Hands Up, Pair Up.

TEACHER SAY: Turn to Lesson 19: Apply. You will see several different addition and subtraction problems with unknowns in the second position. You will work with your partner to find the unknown using any mental math strategy you like. Solve as many as you can in 10 minutes.

STUDENTS DO: Work with partners to solve the problems.

TEACHER DO: Walk around the room helping students as necessary, taking note of students who are having trouble.

Note to the Teacher: If students finish early, ask them to off er their help to students you have noticed are struggling.

TEACHER DO: After about 10 minutes, use an Attention Getting Signal. Go over as many problems as possible, having students demonstrate and explain their work. Encourage students to correct errors in their student books.

TEACHER SAY: Thank you for working so hard on these problems. I appreciate that some of you asked for help when you needed it. I appreciate that you helped each other. Th is is how we learn.
